Rebecca Tangen is a Social Worker who recently obtained an M.S.W. from CUNY Lehman College who likes attending queer potlucks. Rebecca has long believed in the empowerment of young adults and has pursued career and volunteer paths to match this mindset; ther work with teens in foster care, as well as with homeless youth in New York City, has given Rebecca a first-hand understanding of the obstacles present in realizing those goals.
The overlap of kids in shelter who have experienced placement in institutional care receives sparse mainstream attention from advocacy groups with limited resources. Additionally, the model/s of care  within social service agencies often fail to include significant opportunities for the empowerment of those experiencing institutionalized care. Both add to the difficulty of social service professionals looking to effectively advocate for youth in(ter)dependence and support their empowerment, while providing them with guidance and support. Rebecca is among the first to admit that the helping-services field has a long way to grow in order to gain the trust and support of survivors, but hopes to try to help facilitate the process by relying on  years of experience in dealing with disadvantaged teens and advancing systems change
