Are you passionate about supporting the protection of the rights of youth with mental health, emotional and behavioral challenges? Would you like to join like-minded activists in charting the future of the Community Alliance for the Ethical Treatment of Youth, and ensuring its success?

CAFETY is accepting applications from prospective new board members on an ongoing basis and welcomes interested candidates to fill out our application form.

We are seeking board members who:

* are supportive of and passionate about CAFETY's mission.
* are willing to be "worker bees" by volunteering on CAFETY-related projects on an ongoing basis and being active committee members.
* are willing to make a personal financial contribution to CAFETY at a level that is meaningful to them.
* are willing to help fundraise for CAFETY.
* are able to be involved in discussion and decision-making online and by telephone, as well as at board meetings. Board meetings are held monthly by telephone conference call . Most board and committee meetings take place on weekends and weekday evenings. CAFETY is actively exploring ways to make it easier for board members who do not live on the East Coast to take part in board meetings. * Have some knowledge of the issues around residential placement - eg. have experience in residential placement
* are any gender, age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, and family form. Because CAFETY's constituency is extremely diverse, board diversity is important to CAFETY.

Our expectation is that board members will participate in all meetings (with reasonable exceptions), ideally in person but by telephone if that is not possible.

Board members are elected for a year long term.

Becoming a Director – To become a Director you must do the following:

1. Submit an application to the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it requesting to be on the board of directors by Nov 30th of the year that you intend on running for the board. The Nominating Committee will review your application and decide if you are qualified to be on the board of directors based on your application and your previous involvement in CAFETY activities.
2. If the nominating committee approves you will be amongst a number of candidates vying for one of the many director positions. The Nominating Committee will make the candidates known by Jan 1st of the year of the election. The election will take place on the first weekend in December.
3. Win the election.
4. After becoming a director you are required to attend via conference call four quarterly board meetings and any special meetings called by the board of directors during the course of the year. Failure to attend two consecutive meetings, or any meetings in a three month period (whichever period is longer) may result in you being asked to leave the board.
5. In addition to paying the $20/$50 membership fee, board members are asked to provide 6 hours of volunteer time for CAFETY a month, in addition to the regular board meetings. Presentations at conferences and the prep time required for such presentations can be included as volunteer time. Activities done on behalf of a CAFETY chapter may also be considered volunteer time for CAFETY, as long as such activities are not being reimbursed as work by another source.

Director Benefits - As a board member, you are not only an official representative of CAFETY, you are also fiducially responsible for the organization. Please only volunteer for the board if you feel that you can take on this responsibility. We have a number of members who contribute as if they were directors themselves, so do not feel that you need to be a director to contribute significantly to our organization.

However, if you decide to take on the responsibility, for your efforts you will receive the following benefits of being a director:

1. Access to the director's list-serve.
2. The opportunity to vote for and run for our Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson as well as to run for our Secretary and Treasurer (in the event that none of our directors are able to run for Secretary or Treasurer the board may appoint members to serve in these roles)
3. The opportunity to be involved in all decision making matters and have a vote in those matters in the organization.
4. The opportunity to represent the organization in any number of professional, educational, or advocacy settings.
5. First priority in receiving reimbursement for travel and attending conferences.

Rewards of Serving on the Board - You will be playing a direct role in creating a world where youth input into their mental health care is recognized and valued. You will have the satisfaction of working on behalf of a cause you believe in.

You will be part of something that will continue to grow, attract more interest, and make a difference.

You will get to know other wonderful people who have a commitment to this issue.

Your name will be included in our annual report, announced in CAFETY update, and included in other materials.
