The roots of this growing community of concerned alumni/survivors of residential care and our allies lies in our shared experiences and in our desire to come together to learn, educate and ultimately empower ourselves to become effective advocates.
We feel our stories have been ignored, discredited and invalidated for far too long and fear for the physical, emotional, and mental welfare of youth in residential care. We understand that a 'success story' of one, does not and should not negate the trauma of another. We understand that we have a moral obligation to care for one another and can not remain silent - that our experiences were traumatic or otherwise unsatisfactory and without systemic change, other youth continue to be disempowered. If we do not tell our stories, no one else will. We find that there is no better time to speak up than the present...for far too long many of us who have been harmed have been silenced and bought into the belief our perceptions were false. This is no longer true.
Coming soon is the social networking feature (CAFETY Community) of CAFETY.org, similar to our previous set up, but easier to use and with some feature expansion. We hope you make use of your homepage, our blogging function and forums once available. It is our hope that, by connecting with one another and engaging in this virtual community, we may come together and effectively end the over-institutionalization and help ensure youth are partners in their own care.
