Alternately called residential treatment centers, wilderness camps, boot camps, and gulag schools, these programs charge tens of thousands of dollars to reform teens with discipline issues. However their form of "treatment" generally involves techniques like withholding food, water, clothing, shelter or medical care, harmful physical and mechanical restraints, and acts of physical or mental abuse that humiliate,degrade, or undermine a child's self-respect.
Dozens of people have died in these camps and many more suffer from emotional and physical scars many years later. For years these programs have existed with little or no regulation, oversight or standards.
