As a psychiatrist I must confess and disavow some bad history for my profession in the area of coercive treatment. At least we are not in the leadership of the residential therapeutic school movement, but in hospitals and older treatment facilities we presided over some horrible examples of treatment where our patients were without rights. In recent years (since the 1970's) involuntary treatment for adults, mainly commitment to psychiatric hospitals, has been governed by a tight set of criteria.
